Assignment 5: Monogram

This assignment was our final project of 2-D studies! It was about designing a monogram! As stated in one of my submission paper, a monogram is a motif made by overlapping or combining two or more letters or other graphemes to form one symbol. Monogram are often made by combining the initials of an individual or a company, sed as a recognisable symbols or logos. An individual's monogram is often a very fancy piece of art used for stationery for adorning luggage, for embroidery on clothing, and so forth. These monograms may have two or three letters. We needed to research on the items that we'd picked, two minimum A3 sketches of our monogram design, an artwork of our confirmed design and last but not least printing our design on our chosen items as our final presentation. The items and monogram also have to be based off a personal part of ourselves.

For this assignment, I chose three similar sized boxes from Daiso for my items, printed a few marbling ink prints and three gloss paint prints, and a cardboard for some cutouts. As for the personal theme, I chose to talk about the connections and impacts that my family and my friends have had on me through the memories and times that we've made along with how I've changed differently from when I was a kid to a teenager. To show this, I cut out marbling ink papers to paste them on each sides of the boxes. For the two boxes, I pasted them with different mix of colours with the same tone one box was for my family and one was for my friends. The third box is pasted with different sets of tones to represent as me. The three boxes contained origami gloss paint envelopes; two are filled with mini marbling ink paper frames that have pictures of me with my family and friends on it to represent the times and the memories that we've made in the past, and one has pictures of me from young to now to show myself evolving throughout the years.

For the family box, there is a paper sticked on the bottom of the box that says "having somewhere to go is home. Having someone to love is family. Having both is a blessing" by an unknown author. It is definitely relatable to how I feel about my family. The envelope was only able to contain six images as the other picture was too big to fit in. However, that gave me an idea to represent it as my big family since my overall family was on it.

Hi Jim's hand!

For the friend's box, there is a quote underneath the envelope that says "slow down and enjoy the journey right now. Take time for people in your life. They won't always be there". This is very true for me since the some people you see in the pictures were the ones who aren't a part of my life anymore. I never realised how much I took things for granted until they're actually gone. But that taught me to appreciate someone who comes in and out of your life as there is a reason for them to be there so they can get you to the next part of life.

I felt pretty sad that this was our last assignment to submit and our last class of our subject. I really enjoyed my class! We learned a lot of stuffs throughout our semester. I've had some laughing times with my peers and Mr. Choy in class in our lectures and discussions. And everyone else's artworks were really superb as they're capable of doing art like me! Especially when this was my first class that I went to! Man, I'm going to miss this class! :,)
