Assignment 2: Art Movement Study

This is my second assignment. Mr. Choy had given us a lecture about art movement studies and examples of them such as Dadaism, Surrealism, Cubism and Fauvism. This assignment required me to do a portrait of myself in an art movement style. I chose to portray it in a cubist style. Cubism is an art movement that fascinates me with its cubic rendered colours. Factually, It is an early 20th century art movement in which the works are communicated in various styles and forms, specifically in geometric forms. This art movement has also led the development of Futurism and Dadaism.

PROCESSES

Before we received our second task, we were instructed to draw seven or nine sketches of each others' faces in different angles. Here, I drew (in order) Carla, Daryl, Khiirtana, Arissa, Jim, Melvin, Hanan and Mathu in different perspectives. The requirement was to draw their faces using  0.4 or 0.6 ink pigment pen. However, other mediums were allowed such as pencil and colour pencils (for example here, they were watercolour pencils so I decided to paint them except for Jim's part). I love this piece because of the lines that I drew. The tones of the lines make it look as if it's realistic. I also tried to do hatch sketching for the ink pigment part.

Sketch

After the face sketches, we needed one A3 paper to plan and experiment our portrait before executing the final outcome. For my sketch, I drew a portrait of a picture that I took of myself. I also drew multiple straight and some curvy lines to create geometric shapes, or as I'd like to call them, "glass shards" to apply the cubist style. In comparison to my final outcome, I feel like the proportions in my sketch are slightly off better than the outcome. However, the amount of lines in the sketch make them quite intact which I decided to give a more space by distancing the lines from each other and reducing the lines to allow more vibrance in the colours.

This assignment was an enjoyable and "colourful" experience, I may say.

final outcome

I enjoyed making this piece a lot! Instead of putting the same colour schemes from the picture of myself, I altered it by putting the colour blue for my skin and the colour purple for my hair. However, the shirt remained the same. I also enjoy the colour of the background. Overall, the application of the geometric shapes on the portrait make it really abstract. Most favourably, the blending of the colours look so well blended, especially the hair as it looks like a painting.

EXERCISES

Blind contour drawings mixed of Jim, Hanan, Melvin and Jon.
